The Latest From The Greatest (aka News Archive 2003/2004)

  • March 15, 2005: : All good things have to come to an end - I (the webmaster) have decided to stop updating this site. It was set up almost on the day five years ago in order to compensate the lack of a good Mary Lou site after her departure from Columbia Records and with the help of many other fans I've created this site. Since maryloulord.com is up and running now, there finally is a page with firsthand information that's much more up to date than this site has been lately. There really is no point to have two sites with the same content and the only way i could offer something that's not on the official site is to put a lot of work into the reviews and setlist section. However, I simply don't have the time anymore to do just that. I'm very thankful to all the contributors to this site over the years - most of the content will stay on here as an archive, although i may have to take down the "inpiraration" section after a while when too many links are outdated. Thanks a lot to all the visitors over the years as well. There were more of you than I would have ever imagined and that has kept me going for quite a while. And thank you, Mary Lou - for obvious reasons! The webmaster has left the building.

  • November 15, 2004: : "Catfish" reports: "Mary Lou played a short but sweet set at the Middle East in Cambridge, Mass. Sunday night (11/14/2004). It was a benefit show and she was the headliner. she did four songs: "Western Union Desperate", "Stars Burn Out", "Ron", and "The Wind Blew All Around Me".

  • October 27, 2004: : A note from Mary Lou (as posted to the JingleJangle mailing list recently):
"I am going to be making another cd of acoustic songs...Probably in the studio...I would LOVE to hear your suggestions of songs that you think I should cover for this project... There will be a few new originals plus some selected new covers..."

  • July 30, 2004: : A note from Mary Lou (as posted to the JingleJangle mailing list recently):
"Well, as some of you know, I have decided to cancel a bunch of shows I had set up...I dunno...I got burnt-out from the road (literally)...I had been on tour since March and I was becoming quite the party road warrior... I missed my daughter Annabelle, and I was falling in with all those people places and things that can make a person "lose life's directions"...I needed to get off the touring-treadmill and put some things into perspective... Anyway, I'm hoping that at some point I might pick up a few (very small) tours or shows here and there, but nothing too drastic, and certainly not any time too soon... It's not easy being on the road, away from your family and trying to keep yourelf sane and free of chenmicals that help you forget how crappy the road really is!!!... God, it's sooo unglamerous!! You don't even get paid to play...you get paid to DRIVE..... I do have to admit though, some of it was fun...Being on tour with Josh Ritter, Jeff Klein, Eric J and Gingersol....All those guys made the tour cool and as fun as it could be...Met some good people new friends...Heard some great music..."

  • April 13, 2004: : A note from Mary Lou (as posted to the JingleJangle mailing list recently):
"Man the tours really wipe me out...Great fun though...Yea, the Frankfurt show...Man that was a long one...2 hours and 25 minutes or so...Nothing as insane as the SXSW 8 hour marathon, but quite an intense set...I really loved it...The crowd were great. The Basque Country shows were fun as well, but a lot more folky and a little more un-rock- ish...(also very few spoke English and lots of the people did in fact speak Basque as well as Spanish...,so that made it kind of difficult since my songs are so "wordy")...But the people were so so nice and the country is really beautiful..San Sebastian is definately one of the prettiest cities I've ever seen...Bilbao was cool too....Never made it to the Gugenheim, but maybe next time.... So, all in all the tour has been great....It's been awesome to have seen so many of you guys over these past couple of months...The press has been pretty good so far...Blender gave the record 3 stars and included a picture (even though they made fun of my very Mary-Tyler Moore-ish scarf!), so that was cool, and there should be a bunch of new press coming out in Germany and the UK...I'm going to do a tour in Ireland with Josh Ritter next month and I'm really looking forward to that and also some shows in England with Peter Bruntnell (who happens to be one of my favorite song writers (besides Mark Kozelek) right now...) Mark was at my show in San Francisco and although he's a friend of mine, I was really nervous...He rocks my world so so so much!!!!!...You guys should all own a copy of the Sun Kill Moon record!!! WOW!"

  • Janauary 13, 2004: : The European release of "Baby Blue" will now be through the UK-based Loose label. An excellent choice, I might add. The release however has been delayed to April 8.

  • December 11, 2003: The release of "Baby Blue" has been pushed back to March 9, 2004.

  • November 7, 2003: A recent interview and some live-in-the-studio songs (including "Baby Blue" stuff) from Seattle's KEXP can be found on the station's website. (source: KEXP)

  • October 30, 2003: Rubric Records reports: February 24, 2004 will be the release date for Baby Blue. The 14 track album was produced by longtime collaborator Nick Saloman of the Bevis Frond. Nick had a hand in writing many of the songs just for this record. Mary Lou did pull out some previously released Frond songs such as "The Inhibition Twist" (from the Rubric release "What Did For the Dinosaurs") as well as "Stars Burn Out" and "The Wind Blew All Around Me" from North Circular. Two classic rock era nuggets are also unearthed--Pink Floyd's "Fearless" (found on Meddle) and Badfinger's "Baby Blue" (from Straight Up). Mary Lou's heartbreaking NYC CMJ performances just days after the death of Elliott Smith put a sad veneer on what should have been a joyous debut of her first live back up band since the Got No Shadow tour. Amy Phillips of the Village Voice noted this week that her finale at Pianos of "Half Right," an early Heatmeiser song Mary Lou released on Live City Sounds, was "beautifully messy." We were moved by the performance. Thank you Mary Lou for standing defiant in the maelstrom that is....life.

  • October 15, 2003: Mary Lou just got back from England after adding finishing touches to her latest recording. She also will begin to tour again.

  • July 3, 2003: Contrary to what I posted a few days ago, there ARE major news: Mary Lou just finished recorded a new studio record in London, with Nick Saloman of The Bevis Frond producing... The record willbe mixed in the coming weeks. Release date is set for February 2004, although that is yet to be confirmed. Until then she will be touring sporadically... (Four new dates can be found in the tour section) Also, Spain and Germany dates already being booked for March 2004. (source: Andrew Colvin, Mary Lou Lord)

  • June 29, 2003: As you may have noticed, the site was offline for several weeks due to some server problems beyond my control. Currently, there seems to be no real news to report. There are no shows scheduled that I'd be aware of and the mythical new album still has no release date. The only news worth mentioning is that Rubric Records have changed distributors in Germany and apparently some other parts of Europe and that would make a Euro tour at some point in the future much more likely. (source: caw)

  • March 15, 2003: A lot of people have been asking about European dates. There was a very tentative plan for some euro shows, because Mary Lou apparently plans to spend some time in England to co-write new songs with Nick Saloman, but at least the plans for shows on mainland Europe have been dropped.
